Community Care Worker Serves Up Lunch To A Man Sitting At The Kitchen TableAt Ahlers Meals, we make it our mission to help our aging and disabled neighbors remain independent and stay healthy through personalized nutritional support. Founded in 1987, Ahlers Meals offers meal delivery assistance in the Southwestern Ohio area, including Greater Cincinnati, Greater Dayton, and the Lima region. While we have a private pay option for our meal delivery services, individuals who receive Medicaid or Medicare may be eligible for financial assistance.

Who Qualifies for Meal Assistance?

In general, home-delivered meal assistance is available to Medicaid-eligible Ohioans who have a disability or are senior citizens. If you meet any of the criteria below, you could be eligible for financial support for home-delivered meals:

  • Are you a Medicaid or Medicare member?
  • Are you over the age of 65?
  • Do you have a disability?
  • Do you need help preparing meals at home or grocery shopping?
  • Does your health insurance plan include a paid meal benefit?

PASSPORT Medicaid Waiver Program

PASSPORT is a program that helps Medicaid-eligible senior citizens maintain their independence by receiving support services in their homes instead of a nursing facility. If you or someone in your family is eligible for PASSPORT, a case manager will work with you to set up a plan for providing in-home care and services. These can include:

  • Medical equipment and supplies
  • Transportation to medical appointments
  • In-home care
  • Meal delivery and nutritional counseling

PASSPORT is available for adults aged 60 and older. You can determine your eligibility for PASSPORT by contacting your local area agency on aging.

Ohio Home Care Waiver

Certain individuals are eligible for home-delivered meals through the Ohio Home Care Waiver (OHCW). This is a long-term care program offered through Medicaid that helps individuals stay independent in their homes through services like:

  • Transportation
  • Support from a personal care aide
  • Adaptive or assistive devices

OHCW is available to financially eligible individuals with significant disabilities or mental health needs who are under the age of 59. The program allows participants to remain in their homes rather than move into a nursing facility or hospital setting. If you or a loved one would like to apply for a home care waiver, you must complete a waiver application through your local county department of job and family services.

How to Sign Up for Medicaid Meal Delivery

If you are currently receiving Medicaid benefits and would like to have our meals delivered to your home, contact your Medicaid case manager. They can help you enroll in our meal delivery program. If you’re not sure who your case manager is or how to get in touch with them, you can call the Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline at 800-324-8680. Let your case manager know that you want to choose Ahlers Meals as your service provider. Once we have been notified by your Medicaid office that you are eligible, one of our Consumer Intake Specialists will contact you.
